O’Net Online – Add It To Your List of Job Searching Tools

Every so often I hear about a great website that helps job seekers, and I like to share those websites with my loyal readers.  Today I heard about O*Net Online. This fascinating website has a great deal of information that is perfect for just about anyone going into the workforce, looking for a career change, or someone who is ready for the next career step.

So what is O*Net Online, you ask? Their site sums themselves up as “the nation’s primary source of occupational information.” O*Net sends surveys out to every occupation imaginable, collects data from workers and updates the information on their user friendly online site (and it’s all free and updated regularly!).

The theory is that every job requires a different mix of knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform job tasks. Their goal is to describe as accurately as possible this information to help people determine if that is where they want to go with their career.  In addition, this site also provides salary information based on location information.

So let’s get started!

I decided to look up a fun job: Chief Executive

According to O*Net:

What they do:

Determine and formulate policies and provide overall direction of companies or private and public sector organizations within guidelines set up by a board of directors or similar governing body. Plan, direct, or coordinate operational activities at the highest level of management with the help of subordinate executives and staff managers.

On the job, you would:

  • Direct or coordinate an organization’s financial or budget activities to fund operations, maximize investments, or increase efficiency.
  • Confer with board members, organization officials, or staff members to discuss issues, coordinate activities, or resolve problems.
  • Analyze operations to evaluate performance of a company or its staff in meeting objectives or to determine areas of potential cost reduction, program improvement, or policy change.

O*Net runs through the skills, knowledge, abilities, personality, education, and technology skills you would need for this position. I recommend playing around with this site and keeping it in your library of useful tools!
